Louisiana Targets Roblox in Child Safety Lawsuit
Louisiana’s Attorney General, Liz Murrill, has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, one of the largest online gaming platforms in the world, accusing it of failing to implement adequate safety measures for children. The lawsuit alleges that Roblox has facilitated the distribution of child sexual abuse material and allowed predators to target minors by not enforcing proper age restrictions or parental safeguards. The filing points to disturbing examples of explicit games that were accessible on the platform and criticizes Roblox for prioritizing growth and profits over child safety. Roblox has responded by highlighting its existing safety protocols and moderation tools, but the Attorney General argues these efforts came too late and remain insufficient.
Don't miss out on this modern-day gold rush - a 108 grams per tonne gold assay has just been recorded. This company holds 29,000 hectares (over 71,000 acres) in the heart of a modern-day gold rush. Exploration targets have already been identified as a result of locals' artisanal mining (a recent 108 grams per tonne gold assay has been recorded) and funds have just been raised for an initial 10,000 metre (over 32,000 feet) drill program seeking to unlock the potential for a multi-million ounce gold deposit. Redefining Platform Liability
From a legal standpoint, this case sits at the intersection of consumer protection law, platform liability, and child safety. Louisiana is seeking injunctive relief under its Unfair Trade Practices Act, a signal that regulators may be willing to treat inadequate safety protocols as a deceptive business practice. For tech companies, this represents a broader trend: authorities are no longer satisfied with “best efforts” in moderation—they want demonstrable, proactive safeguards. While Roblox argues that no system is perfect, regulators increasingly see imperfection as negligence when children are involved. This aligns with broader U.S. and international scrutiny over online safety, particularly in child-focused platforms.
Learning from Roblox’s Missteps
For startups, this lawsuit is a reminder that trust and safety are not optional add-ons; they’re core to your business model. Founders building consumer apps, marketplaces, or platforms should anticipate that regulators will hold them accountable for how users—especially minors—interact on their services. That means integrating safety-by-design early, such as robust age-gating, active content moderation, and transparent communication with users and parents. Even if your product isn’t child-focused, think through “worst case” misuse scenarios and document the steps you’ve taken to prevent harm. Not only does this reduce legal risk, but it also enhances credibility with investors, who are increasingly viewing safety practices as a marker of operational maturity.
